Properties of translucent paper
Translucent paper, also known as vellum paper, transparent paper or tracing paper, is not completely see-through but has a kind of cloudy transparency. When holding an object closely behind translucent paper, its contours can be vaguely seen. When putting tracing paper directly over an object or printed sheet, the designs below are clearly visible. This allows awesome visual effects to be implemented.
Both the front and back of transparent paper have a matt surface and smooth feel. The closed surface absorbs very little ink which is why the ink takes longer to dry after printing. For this reason, we only use digital printing technology on this type of paper. The low absorbency of tracing paper not only refers to ink but to other liquids, too, which means that it is slightly water-repellent.
Paper with that special something
Matt transparent paper with its unique surface texture is available in 110 gsm quality in our online shop. The cloudy, transparent look opens up a vast array of creative applications. Used as an exclusive insert, translucent paper adds a special touch to folded cards or folded flyers. The popular inserts are ideal for printed material in standard sizes because they are five percent smaller than standard formats. All inserts are printed on one side only because a design on the back would show through. Due to the short paper fibres, any creases will remain visible once the paper is folded. This means that transparent paper must be handled with care to prevent permanent creasing.
Tips on choosing translucent paper
How is translucent paper produced?
Translucent paper is made of short, cellulose fibres which are mechanically refined. The transparency depends on the level of refining of the cellulose. Fillers as used to produce other paper stocks would impair the transparency of the paper.
Is translucent paper writable?
Translucent paper has a smooth front and back and is slightly water-repellent. As a result, liquid-ink pens such as fountain pens cannot be used to write on translucent paper. Ball pens or pencils can be used to write on translucent paper to some extent.
What is important when designing the artwork?
When creating the print design, you should assure sufficient contrast because the paper underneath will show through the sheet of transparent paper. When designing exclusive flyers, also make sure that the design and the product it is printed on work well together.
